A Chiropractor's Advice on Ageing
It's easy to get overwhelmed by 'professional' advice telling you how to live a longer, healthier life.
As a chiropractor, I like to look below the surface to find fundamental changes you can make to improve your life.
You might be surprised (and disappointed) to discover that the basics work. There are no shortcuts in a healthy lifestyle.
So here are 3 reminders of things you already know, to reiterate that healthy living (while ageing) is a product of your input.
Lose that weight.
Extra weight is a noticeable culprit when it comes to life-shortening conditions. It’s a large factor in both diabetes and heart disease.
You can lose weight through regular exercise and eating a healthy, balanced diet that includes plenty of fibre. Which brings me to my next point.
Keep active.
Regular exercise is a given, but staying active in general has been linked to a longer life and fewer chronic illnesses.
If you find it hard to get off the couch—even if you exercise regularly—then you should try to make some changes to your lifestyle that include keeping active.
If you’re stuck at a desk all day for work, find opportunities to stand, walk around, and spend time on your feet.
Making a few extra trips around the house or your workplace are great opportunities to fit in a bit more physical activity.
Cut back on alcohol.
Studies show that moderate drinkers have fewer heart problems than those who don’t drink at all.
The recommendation is one drink per day for women, and one to two for men. But remember, too much alcohol adds excess fat, increases blood pressure, and may cause a range of other health problems.
So drinking in moderation is ideal.
If you don’t drink, this isn’t a reason to start, there are a variety of healthier ways to protect your heart.
Of course, you’ll also want to schedule regular, routine appoints with your chiropractor. In addition to addressing chronic pain, chiropractic care can help you avoid many health concerns.
The secret to a longer, healthier life isn’t just what you can do, it’s the power to know what not to do, and the willingness to follow through.
